Windshield SafetyWhen it comes to vehicle safety features, you'll probably think of antilock brakes, airbags, and seat belts, but the windshield and side windows are unlikely to spring to mind. These various types of automobile glass, on the other hand, are designed to ensure your safety while driving, and the safety of your passengers.
The windshield, unlike the rear and side windows (termed the backlite and sidelites), is produced differently to ensure that it can withstand a collision and allow you to continue driving safely. The technical ingenuity that goes into the creation of windshields is pretty amazing (yep, we are total geeks about this) and you might find it interesting to learn more about how windshields differ from other types of car glass. |
Safety Glass is our Speciality!
The windows in your house are made of standard panes of glass (though the patio sliding doors and any glazed outside doors may have tougher glass in them). Even if the windows are double or triple glazed for temperature control, they will shatter into sharp shards if something hefty smashes into them with enough force. By contrast, in vehicles, where the risks of collision and consequent glass breakage are much higher, tempered glass and laminated glass are usually installed for safety reasons.
We know the ins and outs of auto glass - we've been repairing and replacing windscreens and auto windows in Passaic County for years. You will love the result and your wallet will too!

Laminated Glass
Laminated glass is used in windshields. It's a multi-layer pane bonded together by a thin sheet of film. The film is welded to the glass at high temperature and pressure so that, when the glass is broken, it does not shatter, as expected. Instead, the film holds the glass together so that the broken glass creates a cracking pattern on the surface that looks a bit like a spider's web. A shatter-resistant windshield is an added safety feature designed to keep you and your passengers safe if a collision occurs on the highway.
This important windshield protection feature significantly lowers the likelihood of debris piercing through the glass and striking you while you drive. |
Great Structural Integrity
The windshield, like the body of the vehicle, is an important component of its overall structure. It accounts for at least 45% of the structural integrity in a frontal collision. That's why it makes sense to use the strongest glass available - laminated glass! The windshield also ensures that your car's roof remains rigid in a rollover scenario, and that can save your life!
If your windshield has a few small cracks or a large fracture, the reduced structural integrity might put you at greater risk of harm if you are in an accident. So it's critical to have windshield chips repaired as soon as possible and cracked windshields replaced immediately.

Safe Airbag Deployment
The strength of laminated glass allows the passenger-side airbag to work safely. As this airbag is triggered in an accident, it rebounds off the windshield with tremendous force back toward the passenger. The windshield's main purpose is to absorb the impact of the deployed airbag without shattering, ensuring that the passenger remains safe.
Another major benefit of using stronger tempered automobile glass is to prevent your car windows from shattering under normal driving conditions. While a ride in a car seems pretty smooth these days, the constant vibration of the car over the roadway would mean that standard glass would not last very long. Driving over a manhole cover or a pothole in the road, or slamming the car door would break one or more windows. That's why tempered glass is the right choice!
